Michael was hired by the Indianapolis Police Department (now Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) in 1985 while he was still a criminal justice student at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. While he grew up thinking he would have a career in the steel industry like his dad, he ended up finding his passion in police work.

Michael worked at IMPD for 37 years and four days and retired as a master patrol officer and field training officer.

One of his fondest memories is when he was honored as the East District Officer of the Month. He was nominated by the principal of IPS School 11, Mamie Thompson for volunteering as an after-school math tutor for fourth, fifth and sixth graders. “That was something I was doing on my own, I had no idea she nominated me,” he said. “I still have that Officer of the Month badge today.”

Another highlight of his career was participating in the World Police and Fire Games. “That's another thing that I'm really proud of. I've been able to travel all over the world and compete against other police officers and firefighters in different athletic competitions,” he said. “My wife and kids were always with me. They watched me train and participate. That's one part of my job that my family was always included in.”

Now, in retirement, Michael works as a school resource officer for KIPP Indy Public Schools. He enjoys working with the kids not on a law enforcement level, but more as a counselor. “I help handle problems the kids are having at home that they bring to school with them,” Michael said. “I’m glad I get to be there for them.”

Michael is also a member of the Chief’s Honor Guard. “I am currently the longest-serving member of the Chief's Honor Guard in IMPD history, 28 consecutive years,” he said. “I'm very proud to be a part of that unit. I've worked with a lot of great police officers and chiefs of police.”

Michael enjoys spending time with Holle, his wife of 37 years, and his three children. He also enjoys riding his bicycle, taking camping trips in his RV, traveling and collecting coins.
